 MEDIA TIPS TO GET COVERAGE

  1. Is it something that is unique or different? What will make this/me unique? How can I stand out from the crowd?
  2. Something that is successful. The rags to riches story. Gives people hope.
  3. It’s a great story. Heartwarming. What’s the story behind the story? The story that builds it up your journey.
  4. Is it controversial? Does it go against the grain and is it a different opinion to others?
  5. Statistics. The media loves information and loves to paint the picture with statistics
  6. Commentary. Use your specialty to comment on what the media (on a global scale) has been discussing. Join with the media to provide them commentary. Jump on it NOW –Immediately.
  7. Leverage. Once you start with one media outlet talk to the others. Spread the message as fast as possible. Give them the angles.
  8. Start a conversation. Make yourself known to journalists who report in your areas. Let them know you are available to comment.
  9. The Underdog. Be number two, the media love to run stories that are coming from the underdog.
  10. The Leader. They also love a story from the leader as well.
  11. Humour. The media loves a great story, particularly when it’s quirky. If you have something that is funny, they will run it. I would quote my media friends as being some of the funniest people I know.
  12. Tug at the heart strings. A good story that is emotional will always attract some great coverage.
